 Annual Report - 2005 ,IAP Orissa State Branch

Dear members
Greetings from IAP Orissa state branch Bhubaneswar. It is the great privilege and pride for me to place the Annual Report of IAP Orissa State Branch before you. A lot of academic activities by our district branches & a series of workshops by IAP OSB & Khurda District Branch are the main focus of the report. Also IAP OSB has setup a lot of collaborations with state Govt & Non-Govt Organizations like UNICEF, WCD Deptt. Govt of Orissa, State Council for Child Welfare, EMCP, Social Welfare Board, WHO Orissa, Inner Wheel Club of Bhubaneswar Royal, Basundhara etc. The following are a brief over view of activities conducted by our IAP State & District branches.

State Level National Workshops

The zonal workshop on malaria organized by IAP, Khurda District Branch in associated with IAP, Orissa State Branch on 29.05.05 at Hotel “ The New Marrion” Bhubaneswar. This was inaugurated by the honorable Minister of Labor & Employment Govt. of orissa Mr. Pradeep Kumar Nayak. Around 120 delegates attended the workshop from east zonal States (Orissa, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Jharkand, Manipur, Tripura). Almost all the aspects of malaria was discussed by the eminent experts of East Zone. There was a floor discussion on malaria & practical demonstration of malaria parasites in different modern laboratory methods. The programme was a grand success. The speakers were as follows -

    ORS Day & Week Celebration               

IAP Khurda District Branch & IAP, Orissa State Branch

The ORS Day & Week Celebrated combinely by IAP Khurda District Branch & IAP, Orissa State Branch in collaboration with Orissa State Council for Child welfare (OSCCW). ORS Week was started from 27th July to 3rd August 2005. ORS Day was celebrated on 29th July 05.
ORS Week programme was inaugurated by Hon’ble minister of Women & Child Development Govt of Orissa Smt Pramila Mallick at OSCCW premises on 27th July 2005.She flagged off the campaign vehicle & released the ten points to use ORS. On this occasion an Oriya CD describing the preparations & uses of ors (prepared by IAP Khurda district branch) was demonstrated by Smt. Aparajita Sarangi IAS Director WCD department. All the members of Khurda district branch & OSCCW were present during the programme. Both the guests demonstrated the preparations of ors and offered the ors to all the children to drink. The secretary W&CD dept.& President IAP Khurda district branch combinely unveiled the whole week programme.
The campaign vehicle with team (doctors, volunteers& others) were visited 20 schools, 5 hospitals & 5 urban slums within Bhubaneswar municipal cooperation. They created awareness on ors with special emphasis on low osmolar ORS by posters, pictures and showing the video CD. Also they conducted interactive classes at schools in the form of essay competitions, practical demonstrations regarding the preparations of ORS & displayed the different types of ors available in the market. Dr.Reddy’s Lab. had supplied the stock of ORS packets in each place to be used in case of diarrheal children.
A phone in programme was conducted to answer the questions of the parents of Orissa on 29th July at OSCCW premises between 12 noon to 2pm. The members of IAP Khurda district branch namely -Dr. Aravinda Mohanty, Dr. G.B.Nanda, Dr. S.K. Debta & Dr. A. Pujari were answered around 20 questions regarding diarrhea and ors to the parents of different parts of the state.
The whole week was well covered by the local &national dailies, Doordarshan, E-TV & O TV.
Dr.Reddy’s Laboratory sponsored whole Programmme.
IAP Ganjam District Branch

The ORS week & day celebration by IAP Ganjam District Branch was  from 22nd July 05 to 30th July 05. They organized many public health awareness activities through out the week –
I. Awareness of private medical practitioner for low osmolarity ORS in children.
II. Seminar on management of diarrhea by low osmolarity ORS.
III. Poster competition.  
IV.
ORS mixing competition for mothers.
Awareness talks on ORS at clubs & religious center.

IAP Sundergarh District Branch
IAP Sundergarh District Branch celebrated the full week with a lot of public awareness activities. They involved the other professional bodies like BPNI, IMA, Homeopathy medical social workers, Mahila samity. The method of celebration was as follows:
i. Stickers on WHO ORS were pasted in the Hospital out door, Indoors in Nursing Homes, private Clinics & every Medicine Stores.
ii. Banners with IAP Slogan, in important places of the City for general public information.
iii. Articles on ORS use Diarrhea were published in the local News papers (Oriya, English, Hindi).
iv. Most of the event organized had a place in the local newspapers as a news item.
v. IAP, BPNI, IMA members & members of chemist & Druggist association were involved in most of the events.
vi. Lions Steel Township branch was actively involved in the event.
vii. Study on ORS use rates were assessed among the AWWs and Nursing students. The results were mixed response.
viii. Easy Competition on ORS in Nursing Schools were done. Knowledge assessed were satisfactory. The winners were rewarded.
ix. Students of Nursing Schools participated in Drawing and panting Competition. The best-adjudicated painters were felicitated.
x. Quiz competition on the issue was held in IGH, among the Nursing students and paramedical staffs. The winners were felicitated.
xi. Few of the events were telecasted in the E-TV, O-TV Oriya channels.
xii. Life demonstration on preparation of ORS solutions by using the locally available ORS packs in appropriately measured (glass) portable drinking water was demonstration during most of the events.
xiii. IAP banner along with the massage displayed during the event.
 

 Breast Feeding Week Celebration

IAP Khurda District Branch & IAP, Orissa State Branch: -
Breast Feeding Week (1st August – 7 th August 2005) was combinely Celebrated with IAP Khurda District Branch & IAP, Orissa State Branch in collaboration with Inner Wheel Club of Bhubaneswar Royal, Orissa State Council for Child welfare (OSCCW), Social Welfare Board .
1st August: -
The Week was started on 1st August 2005 with phone in programme on breast feeding at Orissa state council for child welfare premises. This was inaugurated by the secretary WCD dept. Govt of Orissa.The following members of IAP Khurda district branch were present- Dr. Aravinda Mohanty, Dr.Gopabandhu Nanda, Dr.S.K. Debta & Dr. A.Pujari. They answered about 20 quest ions of lactating mothers.
2nd August: -
The Phon in programme was continued with the following members- Dr.Pramod Mohanty, Dr.G.Sarangi, Dr.Biswajeet Mishra & Dr.A.B.Nayak.
3rd August: -
In collaboration with the members of Inner Wheel Club of Bhubaneswar Royal members of Khurda branch visited Capital Hospital, Municipal Hospital & ESI Hospital. They conducted interactive sessions, essay competitions and distributed pamplets on breast-feeding.
4th August: -
Awareness camp for Mahilasamiti members was conducted at unit –9 Girls school. About 30 members from different areas were attended the meeting. Many members of IAP & Inner Wheel club were present. They highlighted the technique, duration, and advantages of breast feeding & answered the quires of mothers.
5th August: -
Sensitizing the slum dwellers at Acharya Vihar U.P. School - Members of IAP Khurda & Inner Wheel club distributed posters, handbills, showed VCD about breast-feeding. A quiz was conducted among slum mothers and awarded the prizes to them.
7th August: -
A Big Fight was conducted in collaboration with State council for child wale fare, social welfare board & Inner wheel club of Bhubaneswar at the conference hall of social wale fare board. The topic of discussion was-IMS Act, its use & misuse. The resource persons were a lawyer proficient in IMS Act, secretary WCD dept., secretary Social welfare board, member of BPNI Bhubaneswar, a lady representing the mother & a prominent journalist. The audience consisted of mothers, college students, inner wheel members.
There was a good discussion regarding the IMS Act. Dr.A. Mohanty & Dr.G.B.Nanda coordinated the programme. Both still & Electronic media covered the whole event.
IAP Sundergarh District Branch: -
The world Breast feeding week was celebrated with BPNI, IAP, IMA, Lions club, Rotary club, Nursing school & Family planning dept of IGH. They conducted 24 programmes at city & community level creating awareness on importance of breast-feeding & family food for development of children. The activities are 27 lectures, 13 public meetings, National demonstrations at community & college level.
Interaction with publics, life demonstration at IGH OPD. Free-gift of cooked food to children. Both Oriya & English document for press release, Radio talks, E-TV Oriya.
Total 12 organizations were involved in the programme (Lions club, Rotary club, YWCA, IMA etc.)
IAP Ganjam District Branch: -

World breast-feeding week was celebrated from 1st august 05 to 7th august 05. Medical & Paramedical staffs of organizations involved-
MKCG Medical College Berhampur, Nurses, Anganwadi workers, CDMO of Ganjam district, Municipal health Officer, students of college of nursing, Christian Hospital, UNICEF & Population Survey International (PSI) & Service clubs like Rotary, Ladies clubs, Association of working mothers etc.
The different activities ware: -

I. Daskatia on importance of Breast Feeding 
II. Street play & posters.
III. Question and answers among the young mothers regarding Breast Feeding.
IV. Seminar on IMA act for private medical practitioner.

II. Standardization of pediatrics office practice (SPOP)

A National workshop on “standardization of pediatrics office practice” (SPOP) was held at Hotel “ The Presidency” (near ISKON temple) Bhubaneswar on 25th Sep 2005. Around 80 delegates from the states attended the workshop.
The Topics for discussion were –

The master trainers were -
Dr. Anup Burma from Raipur (Chatish Gada), Dr. Jayadip Chuadhury from Kolkata (WB) & Dr. Gadadhar Sarangi from Cuttack (Orissa). Convener of the workshop Dr. Pramod Kumar Mohanty has coordinated the programme very efficiency with the help of State Secretary. Thanks to Dr. Reddy`s Lab who had sponsored the workshop in total.The programme was a grand success.
 

III. Strengthening of Routine Immunization

A State level National workshop on “Strengthening of Routine Immunization” was conducted on 30.10.05 at Hotel Triumph Residency, Saheed Nagar Bhubaneswar. It was Inaugurated by Hon'ble Minister Health & Family Welfare Govt of Orissa Sj Bijaya Shree Routary. Around 50 delegates from 30 districts of Orissa, four Medical colleges & Public sector Hospitals were attended the workshop.

Recommendations of workshop


Manpower: -
I. Adequate number of staffs to be given for each immunization center.
II. Doctors (Govt & Private sector) to be trained properly on inoculation & cold chain.
III. NGOs should be trained properly for social awareness.
IV. Doctors involved in immunization working under private, ESI & Public sector are to be involved.
V. Morale of doctors may be boosted by giving an appreciation certificate/awards working in Govt / private sector.
VI. Accountability to be fixed for missed vaccination.
VII. Local village head, Panchayat, NGO, important personality should be involved to spread messages.
VIII. Quacks & medical shops to be restricted from giving vaccination by the local drug Controller. If any such activity observed the drug Controller & drug inspector are to be made responsible.
IX. Media in print & electronic sector should be associated as a team to create general awareness.
 

Materials

I. Sufficient vaccines are to be supplied to all Govt and private sector with proper maintenance & monitoring of cold chain .
II. Cold chain maintenance of Vaccines by ensuring VVM in all Polio vials in Govt / public sector.
III. Cold chain maintenance of optional vaccines with C&F, distributor and retailer to be monitored by empowering the representatives of IAP. The drug Controller is to take urgent steps to prevent uncertified unethical vaccines. The companies selling optional vaccines (Hepatitis A, B, MMR, Typhoid, Chickenpox) are to be made responsible for cold chain from the site of production to the consumer.
IV. Provision of solar generator to the center for alternate electric supply/ low voltage.
V. Provision of immunization card with full information on vaccination, nutritional advise, growth & development chart. UNICEF & IAP Orissa State branch agreed to prepare the immunization card with UNICEF & IAP LOGO in front page which should be small in size, can be kept in pocket and remain safe for long period.
VI. IEC materials should be supplied to make the public awareness.
VII. AD syringes are to be supplied for vaccination.
 

Infrastructure

I. Vaccination center name, date of vaccination, time of vaccination should be displayed in public place.
II. All vaccination centers are to be registered with the Govt. The doctors involved should be trained properly & monitoring regularly.
III. Antinatal clinics should have IEC on wall, which should clarify regarding side effects of vaccines.
 

Problem in Policy & Solution

I. Guidelines for immunization must be prepared by Govt at central level and monitored every month. CDMO at district level and Director FW at State level should be nodal person for any information on immunization.
II. No child should be denied for vaccination even if a single child comes during a session.
III. Proper policy to be prepared for immunization in collaboration with IAP & UNICEF to vaccinate a child attended at birth & not vaccinated below 5years.
IV. Rules & regulations are to be prepared for unauthorized Personels like club & Samity or medical shops or quacks organizing vaccination camps.
 

Tin Age Day Celebration

IAP Ganjam district branch – (1st August – 7th August)

I. This was celebrated at DAV public school by IAP Ganjam district branch. The school children were informed about various aspects of adolescence by the senior members of IAP Ganjam district branch
II. Interactive session with students regarding attitude with elders at home, attraction towards opposite sex etc.
III. Screening of Obesity & Diabetes.
 

IAP Child & Adolescence Health Care Week.

IAP Orissa State Branch & IAP Khurda District Branch Bhubaneswar -
1. Health Check-up 

 Health Camp of children under disadvantage condition of Orissa was conducted by Orissa State Council for Child Welfare (OSCCW), IAP Orissa State Branch & IAP Khurda District Branch at Kalinga stadium, Bhubaneswar on 24.11.05. Our members examined around 300 children. Indian Red Cross Society arranged to do the Blood group of all the children & provided one Photo identity card to all the Children.
2. Health advice & awareness –
Our esteemed members namely Dr. T.N Panda, Dr. S.K. Debata, Dr. Arabinda Mohanty, Dr. G.B. Nanda, Dr. Manas Das, Dr. Binod Mishra, Dr. S. Satpathy, Dr. P.K. Padhy addressed the children regarding Diarroea, ORS, Immunization environmental cleanness & Personal cleanness etc.
3. Quiz Competition -
Dr. Arabinda Mohanty & Dr. G.B. Nanda conducted a Health awareness Quiz among the children. Which was very well accepted by children with great enthusiasms. Some of the children also got small awards from the Secretary IAP, OSB as a token of appreciation.
The total Programme was one day.

IAP Ganjam District Branch


IAP Ganjam District Branch celebrated the Child & adolescent Health Care week from 05.11.05 to 14.11.05. They have done many public activities during the week.

1. Asthma screening camp for Adolescent – on 5.1105 at Saraswati Sishu Mandir Nilakantha Nagar, Berhampur. 250 students of Class VIII, IX, and X were examined. They detected 30 children having signs of asthma.
2. Adolescent immunization camp on 12.11.05 at Aska road Municipal School - MMR, & Typhoid Vaccines were administered to 90 students.
3. Counseling center for adolescences was inaugurated at DAV Public School on 14.11.05. the center will function on 1st Wednesday of every month. The members of IAP Ganjam District branch along with a Psychiatrist will provide counseling.
4. Health care talks on HIV/AIDS awareness, Nutrition, Balance diet & First Aid.
5. Child Health Care Camp – was organized with Rotary club of Berhampur & Andra Mahila Samaja on 14.11.05 at slum areas of Berhampur city. About 300 children were examined.
6. A seminar on New born Care – organized for nursing students of MKCG Nursing School. About 100 Nursing Students participate in the Seminar.

 
Partnership with UNICEF & OSCCW

The year IAP OSB has established Partnership with Orissa State Council for Child Welfare & Unicef Orissa. The main areas of focus are –

1. Provision of training of Medical officers & Staff Nurses on Neonatal resuscitation techniques & handling of Newborn care instruments in various districts of Orissa.
2. Health of Urban slums –
Strengthening the Health of urban slum children by health checkup & routine immunization.
3. To provide the trained medical officers for IMNCI.
4. Monitoring the standard of newborn care at periphery level by both IAP & UNICEF team.
5. Immunization reporting by Private Practice Pediatricians.
6. Training of Anganwadi workers by the IAP members with the help of Orissa State Council for Child Welfare (OSCCW).

IAP Orissa State Branch own office


Already the application for the land at Bhubaneswar is on the pipeline. The Estate Officer has agreed to provide ½ acres of land at Chandrasekhar Pur, Bhubaneswar. We are following up the process. In the mean time, Secretary OSCCW has promised the IAP OSB to provide a room at OSCCW promises for IAP office. We will get it very shortly.

Though the IAP Website was lunched in previous year (2004) yet it is not up date due to some technical resons. I am trying to revive the Web site shortly. IAP e-mail is functioning well, so the members can send the information through e-mail.
 

IAP Election


This year Dr. B.K. Bhuyan the Election Officer conducted the election process as per the guidelines of Central IAP. The following members were elected without any contest.

i. President (2007) – Dr. I.R. Agarwal (Sambalpur)
ii. Executive member North Zone – Dr. Dulalsen Jagatdeo (Balasore)
Also, this year Dr. Gadadhar Sarngi & Dr. Arabinda Mohanty were nominated to East Zone coordinate committee as President (2007) & Vice President (2006) respectively.

PALS & NALS


State Co-ordinater Dr. Ashwini Mohanty conducted PALS & NALS during last Gold Medals: -
IAP Orissa is awarding four gold medals each year. Three Gold medals one each for Utkal University/ Berhampur University/ Sambalpur University for securing highest marks in Pediatrics theory paper of final MBBS Examination. One Gold medal is awarded for securing highest ranks in P.G. entrance examination taking admission in P.G. Pediatrics. This year following are the awardees –
